delonynew

Willis Delony has won national and international acclaim as a jazz and classical pianist, conductor, chamber player, commercial composer, and arranger. His concert explorations of the jazz and classical piano worlds are showcased in a recent recording of music by American composers entitled Double Dance – Classical and Jazz Connections II, which was released by Centaur Records in 2008.  A previous album, also on the Centaur label, is entitled A New World A’ Comin’ – Classical and Jazz Connections. Both are now in international distribution. In a Fanfare magazine review of A New World A’ Comin’, Peter Burwasser writes: “(Delony) plays with gusto and finesse, and with an especially nimble rhythmic sensibility, a proper combination of attributes for jazz, or any other kind of music-making, for that matter.” Previous album credits include a recording of sonatas by Samuel Barber and Sergei Prokofiev, also on the Centaur label, and a jazz album entitled Civilized Conversations, featuring Delony and bassist Bill Grimes. He is featured in a collaboration with bassoonist William Ludwig on the recent recording, Rhapsody in Bassoon, on the Mark Records label, which features the world premiere recording of André Previn’s Sonata for Bassoon and Piano.

During recent concert seasons, Delony has appeared as piano soloist or conductor with American orchestras in Wichita, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Toronto, Madison (Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra), Spartanburg (South Carolina), Rochester, Omaha, Nashville, Fort Worth, New Orleans (Louisiana Philharmonic), Shreveport, the Sun River Festival Orchestra in Bend, OR and the Florida Orchestra (Tampa). He has appeared recently as guest soloist with the Columbus (GA) Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Louisiana Sinfonietta and, in a 2002 Asian tour, the Shanghai Symphony. In July, 2006 he performed a solo recital in Offenburg, Germany as part of the Kreuzgangkonzerte series, performing a solo recital program entitledJazz Meets Mozart. In November, 2006 he traveled to Paris for an appearance as solo recitalist on the La Main d’Or concert series. An experienced jazz arranger, Delony’s scores have been performed by orchestras throughout the U.S. and Canada. His work as pianist, arranger and conductor is currently featured in Club Swing and Stay Tuned, the popular orchestral shows featuring the Minneapolis-based vocal group Five By Design. He is conductor/pianist on the CD recording of Club Swing, which was released in January 2002.

Delony is the Barineau Professor of Keyboard Studies and Professor of Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Prior to his LSU appointment in August of 2000, he taught for fourteen years on the music faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University where he received the university’s President’s Award for Excellence in Artistic Activity. He is also the recipient of an Artist Fellowship by the Louisiana Division of the Arts in recognition of his achievements in classical and jazz performance.

Wayne Newton @ L’Auberge (Lake Charles)

Posted by Paris On June - 20 - 2009

Wayne Newton Live

Wayne Newton Live

What: Wayne Newton @ L’Auberge Du Lac Casino in Lake Charles

When: Fri/Sat June 26&27, 2009 at 7:00PM.

Wayne Newton, is an American singer and entertainer based in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has performed over 30,000 solo shows in Las Vegas over a period of over 40 years, earning him the nickname Mr. Las Vegas. Baton Rouge-based violinist Paris Paraschoudis will be joining Mr. Newton for his Lake Charles shows.

Wayne Newton, whose Las Vegas nightclub act grosses a million dollars a month, got his start on television variety shows in the 1950s while still a teenager. At 17, Wayne and his brother Jerry started their own Vegas act. When he was 21, after much frustration, Bobby Darin finally produced Newton’s single “Danke Schoen.” It became a hit, but it was Newton’s last, as his voice soon lowered. Newton’s Las Vegas act lived on, however, to become the highest grossing act in Las Vegas history. It featured fog machines, a spaceship, and Newton in very tight pants.

Newton earned enough to acquire the Aladdin casino in Las Vegas, an Arabian horse ranch, and a mansion on 50 acres which he calls Casa Shenandoah. In 1992, he was forced to declare bankruptcy when he acquired $20 million in debts while suing NBC for libel; the network had reported that he partnered with the mafia to buy the Aladdin. However, several multi-million dollar performances around the world have since put the singer back on top.

His best known songs include the “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast” (1972) (his biggest hit, peaking at #4 on the Billboard charts), “Years” (1980), his vocal version of “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” (1965), and his signature song, “Danke Schoen” (1963).

Baton Rouge Strings Jam offers workshop for local young string players

(BATON ROUGE) – Beginning to advanced string players up to age 18 are invited to the Baton Rouge Summer String Jam, a week-long chamber music, technique workshop, and creative strings program for all levels of student string players starting Monday, July 20, 2009 through Sunday July 26, 2009.  Held at the School of Music at LSU, BRstringsJAM’09  is a local and financially accessible festival, an effort to connect with and help build the next generation of Baton Rouge musicians, and continue to help make thrive the music community in Baton Rouge.

The Summer String Jam is for all string players interested in improving their musical skills over the summer, learning traditional and creative styles of playing such as jazz and improvisation, Latin, and popular music, and learning ensemble and string skills from experienced faculty.

“Faculty members are international, professional musicians and graduate students from LSU’s School of Music and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra,” said Joanna Steinhauser, the program’s executive director.  “Students will spend three hours per day studying closely with faculty members, learning chamber pieces and playing in small and large ensembles.  They will build upon existing skills through the technique workshop, with opportunities for coachings and masterclasses, a Summer Jam Performance, traditional and creative string playing.”

Raul Gomez, one of the violin instructors for the program, added “This is a unique opportunity for young players of violin, viola and cello in the Baton Rouge area. What makes this program different is that besides their traditional lessons on instrument technique and repertoire, participants will also be able to explore other musical languages such as jazz and fiddling. We are lucky to have Brazilian cellist Marcelo Vieira as part of our team. He has spent many years experimenting with non-traditional ways of playing string instruments”.

The Baton Rouge Strings Jam program will have a final performance with faculty and participants on July 26, 2009 at 4pm at the LSU School of Music.

For more information and high resolution pictures, contact Steinhauser at admissions@brstringsjam.com or call (517) 303-4453.

Cello&Voice @ LSU Hot Summer Nights & Cool Jazz

Posted by Cello On June - 19 - 2009

Cello&Voz-33Marcelo Vieira, Brazilian cellist living in Baton Rouge since January, will present his original performance Cello&Voice, warming up the audience and opening the popular Hot Summer Nights&Cool Jazz Series, hosted by the LSU Jazz Faculty Trio.

Where: Shaver Theater – New Music & Dramatic Arts Building – LSU Campus

When: TONIGHT, Friday 19th June, 7:30pm

A versatile musician and artist eager to explore new artistic medias, Marcelo Martinez Vieira is a cello player with a solid education as well as a passionate composer, musical creation and improvisation enthusiast, always in transit between different musical styles and diverse artistic activities. Raised in Piracicaba-SP, had an early musical initiation, at the age of five, in Piracicaba Music School-“Maestro Ersnt Mahle”, where he had cello lessons for several years with Monica Wolff and André Micheletti among others, and where he took part in several chamber, orchestral and vocal groups.

Graduated in Campinas State University (Universidade de Campinas-Unicamp) under the orientation of the great Greek-Brazilian cellist Dimos Goudaroulis, Marcelo played in Experimental Repertoire Orchestra in São Paulo and in many Inner State Cities Orchestras in São Paulo State. Marcelo is now pursuing a Master degree under the orientation of Prof. Dennis Parker at the Louisiana State University Music School, and living in Baton Rouge.

CELLO&VOICE

The very original Cello&Voice work is the result of Marcelo Vieira’s latest years of research and artistical development. The cello performer carries his musical expression to a whole new level becoming also a singer and reaching deeply into the relationship between musician and instrument. The performance features great technical and musical skills, as Marcelo explores counterpoints between voice and cello, and accompanies himself with a variety of rhythmic patterns and surprising  harmonic features at the cello. Teh repertoire includes Jazz and Brazilian Popular Music, including Marcelo’s own compositions,  also giving space for improvisation.

Cello&Voice is an invitation for a journey through a rich musical universe, from the artist to the audience.
