Kid’s Orchestra is a year round program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baton Rouge. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, Baton Rouge’s Kid’s Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

Kids’ Orchestra’s mission is to increase racial harmony in southern Louisiana. Through the language of music, Kids’ Orchestra is going to bring children of all races, cultures, and backgrounds together. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, the Kids’ Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

We are going to teach children how to play instruments in an orchestra environment. The program will be available free of charge to the students who need scholarships. Although music is going to be the means by which we connect with these children, Kids’ Orchestra is not solely a music program. We are simply using music as a way to inspire, motivate, and nurture these children. This program will teach them life skills including self-worth and interaction with others. We hope that our program will help these children become successful not just in music, but throughout their lives.

Louisiana Sinfonietta

Dinos Constantinides

The Louisiana Sinfonietta under the direction of Dinos Constantinides will present its second concert of the season at the LSU School of Music Recital Hall.

Three of Mozart’s compositions are on the program: the third Violin Concerto in G Major with Greek violinist Paris Paraschoudis as soloist; the Oboe Concerto with LSU Professor James Ryon as soloist; and Duo Concertone for two violins and orchestra. Two principal players of the Louisiana Sinfonietta, Kelly Smith Toney (concertmaster) and Stefka Madere (principal second) will be the soloists for this closing piece. 2 pm.

“The Incense Merchants is an improvisational ensemble. Although nothing is predetermined in any detail, there are certain tendencies to the performances that reflect the various backgrounds and interests of the musicians–classical, conceptual, ambient, free jazz, pop, etc.

Although somewhat counterintuitive, this in practice results in a fairly consistent sound: a cinematic fusion of genres and periods that is frequently a melodic minimalism at base, with some self-indulgence free form expressionism on top, something akin to the Lounge Lizards, Kronos Quartet, and John Zorn. ”

We are a vibrant and dynamic organization of which I’m proud to be a part. Please consider joining us to help promote the presentation of live music from Master Works to Pops, from small ensembles, to chamber groups, and from educational concerts to Opera! Come to the ASO to hear some of the most outstanding guest artists on the planet!

How do we do it? We are governed by a Board of Directors, ably assisted by the Acadiana Symphony Women’s League, administered by our Executive Director and staff, and supported by friends, patrons, and corporate sponsors. We operate with a small payroll and depend heavily on volunteers from all walks of life, interests, and backgrounds. The cost of supporting a professional symphony orchestra is surprising. It takes constant attention from asking our corporate partners for sponsorships for all our performances, writing and submitting grants, appealing to individuals for contributions, and constantly searching for ways to reduce cost. Our subscribers care deeply about the preservation of our symphony and know that the investment in season tickets and the investment in time attending our concerts is an investment in the quality of life in Acadiana.

Marcelo M Vieira, Brazilian cellist and singer based in Baton Rouge will give a Workshop on improvisation and creative playing for bowed strings at the Grace Notes Violin Studio. Marcelo is a graduate student at LSU, majoring in in Jazz Studies. Crossover artist (classical/popular) for more than 10 years, in this workshop he will be introducing the up-to-date topic of improvisation for bowed string players. He will talk (and play) about how to start improvising, ways of exploring your own creativity through your playing and techniques to write and/or play your own lines in songs and instrumental music . The games and methods he will work on can be useful for any musical style. Besides playing, Marcelo has been performing his original Cello&Voice works, singing and playing his own songs and arrangements.

Willis Delony has won national and international acclaim as a jazz and classical pianist, conductor, chamber player, commercial composer, and arranger. His concert explorations of the jazz and classical piano worlds are showcased in a recent recording of music by American composers entitled Double Dance – Classical and Jazz Connections II, which was released by Centaur Records in 2008.  A previous album, also on the Centaur label, is entitled A New World A’ Comin’ – Classical and Jazz Connections. Both are now in international distribution. In a Fanfare magazine review of A New World A’ Comin’, Peter Burwasser writes: “(Delony) plays with gusto and finesse, and with an especially nimble rhythmic sensibility, a proper combination of attributes for jazz, or any other kind of music-making, for that matter.” Previous album credits include a recording of sonatas by Samuel Barber and Sergei Prokofiev, also on the Centaur label, and a jazz album entitled Civilized Conversations, featuring Delony and bassist Bill Grimes. He is featured in a collaboration with bassoonist William Ludwig on the recent recording, Rhapsody in Bassoon, on the Mark Records label, which features the world premiere recording of André Previn’s Sonata for Bassoon and Piano.

During recent concert seasons, Delony has appeared as piano soloist or conductor with American orchestras in Wichita, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Toronto, Madison (Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra), Spartanburg (South Carolina), Rochester, Omaha, Nashville, Fort Worth, New Orleans (Louisiana Philharmonic), Shreveport, the Sun River Festival Orchestra in Bend, OR and the Florida Orchestra (Tampa). He has appeared recently as guest soloist with the Columbus (GA) Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Louisiana Sinfonietta and, in a 2002 Asian tour, the Shanghai Symphony. In July, 2006 he performed a solo recital in Offenburg, Germany as part of the Kreuzgangkonzerte series, performing a solo recital program entitledJazz Meets Mozart. In November, 2006 he traveled to Paris for an appearance as solo recitalist on the La Main d’Or concert series. An experienced jazz arranger, Delony’s scores have been performed by orchestras throughout the U.S. and Canada. His work as pianist, arranger and conductor is currently featured in Club Swingand Stay Tuned, the popular orchestral shows featuring the Minneapolis-based vocal group Five By Design. He is conductor/pianist on the CD recording of Club Swing, which was released in January 2002.

Delony is the Barineau Professor of Keyboard Studies and Professor of Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Prior to his LSU appointment in August of 2000, he taught for fourteen years on the music faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University where he received the university’s President’s Award for Excellence in Artistic Activity. He is also the recipient of an Artist Fellowship by the Louisiana Division of the Arts in recognition of his achievements in classical and jazz performance.
