Kids’ Orchestra

Posted by LACM On May - 6 - 2011

Kid’s Orchestra is a year round program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baton Rouge. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, Baton Rouge’s Kid’s Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

Kids’ Orchestra’s mission is to increase racial harmony in southern Louisiana. Through the language of music, Kids’ Orchestra is going to bring children of all races, cultures, and backgrounds together. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, the Kids’ Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

We are going to teach children how to play instruments in an orchestra environment. The program will be available free of charge to the students who need scholarships. Although music is going to be the means by which we connect with these children, Kids’ Orchestra is not solely a music program. We are simply using music as a way to inspire, motivate, and nurture these children. This program will teach them life skills including self-worth and interaction with others. We hope that our program will help these children become successful not just in music, but throughout their lives.

Please visit Kid’s Orchestra’s website for more information.

STOLEN VIOLIN + MULTICHANNEL MIXER in Baton Rouge

Posted by LACM On December - 1 - 2010

On Tuesday, November 30th, at 4:50pm, 3 lockers on the 2nd floor of LSU School of Music were broken into.

The following is a description of both items stolen. Please spread the word, help notify local pawnshops and keep your eyes open on eBay, Craigslist, etc.

Watch security camera video here

1. Violin:

Belongs to Chung-Hui Hsu (chsu1@lsu.edu). Here’s her description of the instrument and a picture:

I put my violin back to locker at 1:30pm, November 30, and I found it lost at 9:30pm. During the hours, I was at home. My violin case is made by wood, and its color closed to white. Outside the case, it covered a waterproof cover called “cushy” marked on it. There is a Voodoo doll hanging on the zipper, and there are t…wo music parts inside the cover, one is Beethoven Violin Concerto Violin I and the other is Beethoven Egmont I. Inside the violin case, the color of the violin is antique brown, and has many cracks on it, especially on its edge. There are four strings on it and it has green color nearby the bridge. I put a sticker underneath the chin rest, and on the sticker, there is a monkey, a word “Amy,” and my name in Chinese character “許仲蕙.” My violinmaker is Pistucci Giovanni who is from Naples, Italy, and made in 1892(or 62), the mark can be found inside the f hole. Besides, there is some other stuff inside the case: one violin bow, one rosin, one shoulder rest, one tuner, and one hygrometer. There are three pictures: one is my person picture, the other is I with violin, and another is a dog. If you get a chance, please pass this message on, I really need your help to find my fiddle back, Thank you.

2. Multi-channel mixer:

Belongs to Raul Gomez (raul@rgomezmusic.com). Here’s a picture and description:

.

Phonic POWERPOD 620 PLUS 200-Watt 6-Channel Powered Mixer with DFX

Incense Merchants (Thu 03/18, 8pm)

Posted by LACM On March - 18 - 2010

On Thursday, March 18 at 8 pm
in the beautiful LSU School of Music Recital Hall The Incense Merchants will put you back in touch with your true nature!

Folks, it doesn’t get any better than this!
Go get yourself an early dinner and then head on
over to the LSU School of Music.

————————————————————-
“While the sweet, smoky scent of curling incense rises into the air, six musicians create a sound that has never been heard before and will never be heard again…creating cohesive magic.”
- Lindsay Nunez, LSU Reveille
————————————————————-
“unquestioningly genre-free and sublimely mystical.”
- Travis Leeper, Tiger Weekly
————————————————————-
“Jon Hassell meets David Sylvian at the wrong speed, in a good way. In the spirit of Les Baxter. In other words, sounds like Alice Coltrane.”
- Alex V. Cook – Author, Journalist, Critic
————————————————————-
“The Incense Merchants is an improvisational ensemble. Although nothing is predetermined in any detail, there are certain tendencies to the performances that reflect the various backgrounds and interests of the musicians–classical, conceptual, ambient, free jazz, pop, etc.

Although somewhat counterintuitive, this in practice results in a fairly consistent sound: a cinematic fusion of genres and periods that is frequently a melodic minimalism at base, with some self-indulgence free form expressionism on top, something akin to the Lounge Lizards, Kronos Quartet, and John Zorn. ”
- Chip Osborne

LACM Welcomes Acadiana Symphony

Posted by LACM On February - 17 - 2010

We would like to welcome Acadiana Symphony Orchestra to the growing community of LouisianaClassicalMusic.com! Lead from the podium by Maestro Mariusz Smolij, Acadiana Symphony is a great presence in the Louisiana music scene. Check out their website and go to their concerts!!

Here’s an excerpt from their website, written by Tish Johnson, President, ASO Board of Directors:

We are a vibrant and dynamic organization of which I’m proud to be a part. Please consider joining us to help promote the presentation of live music from Master Works to Pops, from small ensembles, to chamber groups, and from educational concerts to Opera! Come to the ASO to hear some of the most outstanding guest artists on the planet!

How do we do it? We are governed by a Board of Directors, ably assisted by the Acadiana Symphony Women’s League, administered by our Executive Director and staff, and supported by friends, patrons, and corporate sponsors. We operate with a small payroll and depend heavily on volunteers from all walks of life, interests, and backgrounds. The cost of supporting a professional symphony orchestra is surprising. It takes constant attention from asking our corporate partners for sponsorships for all our performances, writing and submitting grants, appealing to individuals for contributions, and constantly searching for ways to reduce cost. Our subscribers care deeply about the preservation of our symphony and know that the investment in season tickets and the investment in time attending our concerts is an investment in the quality of life in Acadiana.

And we also work diligently on fundraisers! Our fund raisers are truly FUN: Symphony Suppers, Decorators ShowHouse, the Artchestra Project (a painted violin event), MadHatter’s Luncheon, our Symphony Scramble golf tournment, and our never-ending search for creative ways to support our symphony have brought our volunteers together in a very successful year. Please join us! Help us make the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra and Conservatory of Music thrive!
