Kid’s Orchestra is a year round program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baton Rouge. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, Baton Rouge’s Kid’s Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

Kids’ Orchestra’s mission is to increase racial harmony in southern Louisiana. Through the language of music, Kids’ Orchestra is going to bring children of all races, cultures, and backgrounds together. In collaboration with a broad array of community partners, the Kids’ Orchestra program will provide music education, instruments, leadership development, and performance opportunities to Baton Rouge’s kindergarten through fifth graders.

We are going to teach children how to play instruments in an orchestra environment. The program will be available free of charge to the students who need scholarships. Although music is going to be the means by which we connect with these children, Kids’ Orchestra is not solely a music program. We are simply using music as a way to inspire, motivate, and nurture these children. This program will teach them life skills including self-worth and interaction with others. We hope that our program will help these children become successful not just in music, but throughout their lives.

Please visit Kid’s Orchestra’s website for more information.

On Tuesday, November 30th, at 4:50pm, 3 lockers on the 2nd floor of LSU School of Music were broken into.

The following is a description of both items stolen. Please spread the word, help notify local pawnshops and keep your eyes open on eBay, Craigslist, etc.

Watch security camera video here

1. Violin:

Belongs to Chung-Hui Hsu (chsu1@lsu.edu). Here’s her description of the instrument and a picture:

I put my violin back to locker at 1:30pm, November 30, and I found it lost at 9:30pm. During the hours, I was at home. My violin case is made by wood, and its color closed to white. Outside the case, it covered a waterproof cover called “cushy” marked on it. There is a Voodoo doll hanging on the zipper, and there are t…wo music parts inside the cover, one is Beethoven Violin Concerto Violin I and the other is Beethoven Egmont I. Inside the violin case, the color of the violin is antique brown, and has many cracks on it, especially on its edge. There are four strings on it and it has green color nearby the bridge. I put a sticker underneath the chin rest, and on the sticker, there is a monkey, a word “Amy,” and my name in Chinese character “許仲蕙.” My violinmaker is Pistucci Giovanni who is from Naples, Italy, and made in 1892(or 62), the mark can be found inside the f hole. Besides, there is some other stuff inside the case: one violin bow, one rosin, one shoulder rest, one tuner, and one hygrometer. There are three pictures: one is my person picture, the other is I with violin, and another is a dog. If you get a chance, please pass this message on, I really need your help to find my fiddle back, Thank you.
